MONDAY 8 MARCH - ON THE RIVER

After mooring along the river overnight, we left our mooring to head to Mannum up River. It was lovely cruising along on what was promising to be a lovely day. We arrived in Mannum around 10am and a coach came to collect us for a town tour.

Mannum has a rich history, all associated with its location on the river. It was lovely being driven around learning about how the town developed and how it is now becoming, once again, a desirable place to live. Mannum Waters was especially interesting as a relatively new artificial canal community with access to the river. Originally developed to remove the houseboats from the main channel this has become a win win for the river community. Previously, some 180+ houseboats moored along the river’s edge. Almost all are now moored in this newly developed canal community.

Good morning

A chorus of Corellas greeted us

Ever present pelicans

Whistling Kites perching and soaring every day

An old River Red Gum which was probably affected by the 1956 flood, sawn off at the water level of that flood.

The Murray Princess

What do you do when you retire?

Mannum Lookout

There are many "ferries" across the Murray, we call them punts!

The mark at the top of the panel is the water level of the 1956 flood. Reminders everywhere

The old wood fired paddle steamers, long since retired

Again, the 1956 flood levels come to mind when this pub had boats pulling up to the top verandah for a beer. We had quite a steep hill to climb to get up to the main street of Mannum where this pub is.

The paint line marks the flood levels in the Information Centre
